Join the SA/NT Chapter online for this Chapter Led Conversation exploring the overarching theme of WIL regulation/accreditation. The session will be comprised of two presentations.

Presentaiton 1: Regulation affecting WIL – Identifying and avoiding the mines in the minefield

Associate Professor Anne Hewitt from University of Adelaide

Did you know that giant pouched rats and dogs can be trained to identify unexploded ordinances to help eradicated land mines after a conflict? But those engaged with designing, managing and running WIL are often sent out to do our jobs without the knowledge needed to identify the regulatory landmines which could explode our projects.  This presentation will help WIL practitioners identify and avoid some of the common regulatory landmines which can affect WIL, so we can navigate our way to a successful outcome for all stakeholders.

Presentation 2: Meeting Accreditation requirements while navigating a unique engineering WIL Program

Dr David Hobbs and Dr Thomas Vincent from Flinders University

Associate Professor Denise Jackson (ECU)

Presenters

Associate Professor Anne Hewitt

University of Adelaide

A Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy UK, Anne’s research focuses on equitable access to high quality work and education. Within that field, her current projects consider prohibitions of discrimination, the rights of non-traditional workers including student interns, the regulation of higher education and work integrated learning. She was an author of an International Labour Organization (ILO) study on the regulation internships in 13 jurisdictions in 2018, in 2019 she was an organizer of both Australian and international (ILO) symposia considering the regulation of work experience. Anne edited and contributed to a significant international analysis of the regulation of work experience, published jointly by Edward Elgar and the ILO in 2021 and has authored major reports on the role Australian universities are playing in regulating work experience and considering scholarships for work-integrated learning, funded by the ARC and ACEN. She was recently the recipient (with Deanna Grant-Smith, QUT & Craig Cameron, USC) of a WACE grant to fund research into the equity implications of online WIL.

Associate Professor Denise Jackson (ECU)

Dr David Hobbs

Flinders University

Dr David Hobbs is a Senior Lecturer in Rehabilitation Engineering and an Early Career Researcher (ECR) at Flinders University within the Medical Device Research Institute and the College of Science and Engineering. He has undergraduate degrees in Physics (1995), Life Sciences (2000) and Biomedical Engineering (2001, with First Class Honours) and a PhD in Rehabilitation Engineering (2018). Prior to joining Flinders as a balanced academic in 2010, Dr Hobbs worked in industry as a Rehabilitation Engineer and Assistive Technologist for 9 years at a leading paediatric disability and rehabilitation centre in Adelaide.

David is the Course Coordinator for the Biomedical Engineering degrees at Flinders University and the Co-Topic Coordinator with Dr Thomas Vincent for the Work Integrated Learning Program across the whole College of Science and Engineering. He is based at the Tonsley Innovation Precinct and his research focusses on the development of new rehabilitation strategies and novel assistive technologies for people with an impairment.

Dr Thomas Vincent

Flinders University

Dr Thomas Vincent is a Senior Lecturer in Structural Engineering at Flinders University within the College of Science and Engineering. He has an undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering (2004), a Master of Engineering (Research) in Structural Engineering (2009) and a PhD in Structural Engineering (2015). In recent years Dr Vincent has received Vice-Chancellor’s Awards in both Research (2020) and Teaching (2022) as he enjoys an active pursuit of excellence in both categories.

Dr Vincent is located at Flinders University’s Tonsley campus within the Tonsley Innovation District. He is the Course Coordinator for the Civil Engineering degrees at Flinders University and the Co-Topic Coordinator with Dr David Hobbs for the Work Integrated Learning Program across the whole College of Science and Engineering. His research focuses on high-performance or sustainable materials in concrete construction.

Facilitated by the ACEN Chapters, Chapter Led Conversations provide a platform for discussion around current issues facing WIL practitioners. Open nationally to all ACEN Members, these virtual sessions involve facilitated online conversations in discipline groups. We invite you to speak up, share your thoughts on what matters to you most and offer strategies to encourage one another in our WIL community.
