NPILF Roundtable Report to Government

Shaping the Future of Work-Integrated Learning in Australia

In October 2025, WIL Australia convened a national roundtable that brought together participants from universities, industry, community organisations and government to reflect on the achievements of the National Priorities and Industry Linkage Fund (NPILF) and chart a course for ongoing sustainable, equitable Work-Integrated Learning across Australian higher education.

This report was prepared by WIL Australia, with input from sector interest-holders during the October 2025 roundtable and subsequent peer-review with members of our national organisation. It captures the collective voice of the sector and presents ten recommendations across three strategic domains: Structure, Practice and Funding.

Recommendations:

Structure

  1. Embed quality WIL as core institutional infrastructure
  2. Strengthen governance and coordination across the WIL ecosystem
  3. Develop scalable models for virtual and flexible WIL

Practice

  1. Build long-term, reciprocal partnerships with industry and community
  2. Advance equity and inclusion across all WIL models
  3. Embed cultural safety and strengthen First Nations engagement
  4. Strengthen curriculum integration and staff capability

Funding

  1. Establish sustained national funding for WIL
  2. Introduce targeted financial supports for employers and community partners
  3. Reduce financial barriers for students and promote equitable access.
