Occupational Therapy Placement in the Western Darling Downs

Course:

Bachelor of Ocupational Therapy (Honours)

Placement Location:

Western Darling Downs

Year of Placement:

2025

My 10-week placement across the Western Darling Downs region has been an eye-opening experience that has shaped both my clinical skills and personal perspective on rural life. Splitting my time each week between small-town hospitals in Miles, Tara, Wandoan and Taroom and an aged care facility in Chinchilla allowed me to work with diverse groups of people and treatment approaches. From running group sessions and working on quality improvement projects to managing a caseload covering everything from stroke rehabilitation, paediatrics, oedema management, hand therapy and home modifications, the opportunity to complete this placement pushed me out of my comfort zone and in turn, built confidence in myself both clinically and personally. This experience taught me many foundational clinical skills that I know will serve me well in my future such as information gathering, self-management and service provision and self-reflection.

This placement has solidified my commitment to pursuing rural practice after graduation. While I had always been interested in the idea of working rurally, experiencing firsthand the connections I built with clients and their families has confirmed that rural occupational therapy is a practice area I am passionate about. The clinical variety and the opportunity to make a difference in close-knit communities has reinforced my decision to seek employment in rural areas, where I believe I can contribute meaningfully to communities that often struggle with equitable healthcare access.

Beyond the clinical benefits, I was lucky enough to fully immerse myself in rural community life through attending local race days, joining in weekly bingo nights, and sightseeing in various small towns in the region such as the Bunya Mountains and Roma with new friends. These additional experiences on weekends – made possible by this scholarship – contributed to the broader experience of completing a rural placement, and I know I will look back fondly on the memories I made during my time out here. I feel grateful to have been given the opportunity and have received support from WIL Australia to not only complete a rural placement but instil within me a true passion for rural occupational therapy practice that I plan to pursue in my future.
